Why did imperial unity revive in some parts of the world from the fifth through the tenth centuries C.E
? What relationship, if any, existed between the rise of these new empires and the transformation of Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity into world religions?
Answers will vary but correct responses should include: Imperial unity was revived with the spread and influence of Islam, Buddhism and Chrisitianity. Flexibility and adaptability made Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism suitable for projection around the world. These religions could combine local with universal appeal, making it a unifying factor for the various tribes, groups, and cultures. Empires could bring together outlying groups under the shared cultural aspects of these world religions while protecting some of their own cultural traditions. The rise of the Christian Church from persecution to predominance was complete in 395, when the emperor Theodosius proclaimed Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire and reduced pagan traditions to the underprivileged status formerly imposed on Christians. From the late fourth century onward, nobility and sanctity converged.
