Discuss how an erection normally occurs and what happens when a male has erectile dysfunction. What is the typical treatment and how does it work?

What will be an ideal response?

Erections occur as a result of either direct stimulation or cognitive factors. Parasympathetic neurons in the sacral spinal cord respond to both mechanoreceptors in the genitals (direct stimulation) and descending input from the brain (cognitive factors). These parasympathetic neurons release acetylcholine (Ach) and nitric oxide (NO) into the spongy erectile tissues of the penis, which subsequently fill with blood. A common type of sexual dysfunction in men is erectile dysfunction, which occurs when a man is unable to achieve an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. Medications used to treat erectile dysfunction promote erection by enhancing the effects of NO on the erectile tissues.
