Using any two of the different perspectives of personality theory, discuss your own personality. What are your positive and not-so-positive attributes? Have you ever stopped to wonder how you became the person you are? What do you think contributes to the personality you have developed? Are there ways you'd like to change your personality? Do you think those changes are possible?

Personality characteristics should be explained through two of the following: Freud's psychodynamic approach, the humanistic approach, the social-cognitive approach, the dispositional approach, or the biological approach. Freud's psychodynamic approach focuses on unconscious processes that are expressed in our personality and everyday behavior. Students will reflect on a personality trait and relate it to the id, ego, and superego, or they may reflect on the developmental stages proposed by Freud (oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital). When explaining a personality characteristic using the humanistic approach, they would relate the trait to how it fits into a desire for personal growth. The social-cognitive approach suggests that both personal and situational factors are central to personality. Students may explain how their personality fits into personal or situational factors in their own life. The dispositional approach focuses on specific traits that are commonly found in research. Students may explain their personality and how it fits into the Big 5, or perhaps another trait theorist's list of traits. Finally, they may use the biological approach to explain some of their characteristics. They may relate how their personality is similar to their parents' or siblings', or perhaps discuss hormonal impacts on their personality.
