Name one autoimmune disease affecting the skin in which epitope spreading is involved, and explain how
What will be an ideal response?
Pemphigus foliaceus. Autoantibody production against the protein desmoglein, a component of desmosomes, initially involves epitopes that do not result in any tissue damage or symptoms. Only when additional desmoglein epitopes become involved, as a result of epitope spreading, does the autoimmune response cause damage to desmosomes and give rise to lesions in the skin (the disease pemphigus).
