In 2011 the Omaha, NE Police Department hosted the Social Media Internet Law Enforcement (SMILE) national conference. The Dunwoody, GA Police Department recently experimented with using Twitter to help the city's 46,000 residents better understand the nature of police work. For 24 hours the department tweeted about each significant activity undertaken by its officers—beginning with an early morning traffic stop and concluding the next morning with a 6 a.m. report of a suspicious person. The California Highway Patrol created Twitter pages—one for each of its divisions—and the Modesto, CA Police Department set up an active Twitter account to notify followers about major incidents and to provide links to ongoing investigations and newsworthy events. Thedepartment also uses Twitter to steer people away from accident sites, to coordinate the activities of searchers during Amber Alerts, and to warn people to stay inside during potentially dangerous situations.
