Language helps us define and understand relationships. We can use language to put a label on a relationship to make it easier to talk about, such as calling someone your “boyfriend” or “coworker.” We can also use figurative language to help us understand a relationship. A common mechanical metaphor for a relationship is that of a roller coaster--this relationship is defined by its unpredictable ups and downs. Another common metaphor is that of food. When someone does something nice for you on top of having an already lovely relationship, you might call it “the cherry on top.”
