Describe the role of the gatekeeper.

What will be an ideal response?

The gatekeeper concept rests on the idea that one physician is responsible for providing all primary care for the patient. In addition, the PCP determines when referrals to specialists are needed and then provides oversight and coordination for the use of the specialists on an ongoing basis. The gatekeeper concept is designed to control the patient’s use of expensive resources, to reduce patient-initiated use of specialty physicians, and to ensure overall coordination of care.
