If you were mentoring a newly hired teacher who was interested in presenting a unit on food safety, what suggestions would you have to help him or her get started?

What will be an ideal response?

First, it would be important for the new teacher to determine what children may already know about food safety so that learning activities can be designed to reinforce and build on this knowledge foundation. You might also encourage the new teacher to use the National Health Education Standards (see https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/sher/standards) to identify topics and behavioral indicators that are most appropriate for children at a given grade level. You might also suggest that the teacher search for lesson plans posted on reputable websites to find ideas and activities that he/she may want to include. Once the new teacher has determined specific topics to be addressed, he/she should be encouraged to create written activity plans that identify behavioral objectives, instructional methods, content, and assessment measures.
