ANS: Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other physical and expressive behavior of a sexual nature that interferes with a person's life. Quid pro quo harassment occurs when a school employee causes a student to believe that she or he must submit to unwelcome sexual conduct in order to receive some benefit. Hostile environment harassment occurs when unwelcome verbal or physical conduct is so severe, persistent, and/or pervasive that it creates an abusive or hostile environment for the student. Schools can be liable for damages when they fail to address sexual harassment. For prevention, schools should have and implement a sexual harassment policy, be prepared to receive and respond to complaints, offer prevention training for students and staff, and have a grievance procedure in place. Teachers need to be familiar with policies and procedures and to report any abuses, and they should adopt behavioral guidelines for their classrooms. Teachers also play a role by establishing a sense of community that helps prevent harassment.
