How and why have the human population size and growth rate changed over time? How many people live on Earth today?
What would be an ideal response?
There are roughly 7 billion people on the earth right now, but we weren’t always this way. We multiplied exponentially as time went on. The human population size has grown and changed over time because of many things. First, our life expectancy increased while the crude death rate fell. There is better technology now so the infant mortality rate has decreased. Speaking of the infant mortality rate, back in the day and definitely in African areas, many families have to do hard labor such as working on their farms. The more hands each family had, the easier it was. Also, the infant mortality rates are quite high in African areas, specifically Niger, so more people will have more children in case some of them die. Also, back in the day, especially in China, the more children you had, the more honor you brought to your family and the more people there were to help and care for the elderly. Some countries are experiences some major over-population and China decided to implement a one-child act where each couple could only have one child in order to have a zero population rate. Just recently, China has loosened up its rules on who can have more than one child but implementing this act prevented about 400 million childbirths.
