Given that OCD appears to result from abnormalities in the basal ganglia, deep brain stimulation has been used to bolster the activity of the basal ganglia or the fiber tracts connected with them. This therapy does reduce symptoms in some patients. Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is also effective.
