What was the sequence of events before Trenton?
I. In December, General Lord Cornwallis captured New Jersey and forced Gen Washington to withdraw across Delaware River into Pennsylvania. In the meantime, General Clinton seized Newport, Rhode Island. As winter set in, the British entrenched in New Jersey. Because of the need to feed a large army as well as a sense of vengeance, British troops and the Hessians plundered the countryside and committed various acts of atrocities such as rape, torture and murder. As a result, it threw New Jersey into a state of anarchism with severe strife between the Loyalists and Patriots.
II. In October, George Washington betted wrongly on staying to defend New York and Fort Washington. With an almost 1:3 ratio of men against, the Continental army was crushed by the big guns and the hired Hessians. New York and the Hudson fell to British hand. On top of that, morale was hurt and Washington lost half of the army.
III. In the fight at Long Island, August 1776, George Washington was outflanked by General Howe's army. The Continental Army was cornered, with 300 dead and 1000 captured. George Washington and the remaining army managed to sneak out to Manhattan Island at the New York Harbor in the dark. At day break, a fog engulfed the area to hide the rebels from British sight.
IV. Washington entrenched in Pennsylvania for the winter. Soldiers' morale was low and desertion was rampant. Diseases like small pox plagued the camps. Citizens in Pennsylvani fled, leaving their shops and homes. Even the Continental Congress moved south to Baltimore. In this darkest time during the revolution, Thomas Paine wrote and printed the American Crisis.
