Terminology of the professional title – The term counselor varies from state to state (e.g., licensed professional clinical counselor, licensed mental health counselor), whereas a Licensed psychologist is a unified term for licensees across the U.S.

Accreditation – Counselor education programs are accredited through CACREP and counseling psychology programs are accredited through APA.

Professional identity and organizations – ACA is the professional organization for professional counselors and APA is the professional organization for counseling psychologists.
