What populations are at greatest risk for dental erosion?
What will be an ideal response?
The populations at greatest risk for dental erosion are individuals with eating disorders, specifically bulimia nervosa, and individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). Bulimia nervosa is characterized by frequent vomiting. The pH of the vomited gastric content is well below the pH at which demineralization of the teeth occurs, and therefore the frequent exposure to these gastric content results in the low-pH environment favoring dental erosion. Similarly, individuals with GERD regurgitate acidic gastric acids due to the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. The low pH of the gastric acid results in tooth demineralization and dental erosion.
