Discuss the importance of cultural cognition regarding rape and society's view of what qualifies as rape

What will be an ideal response?

Cultural cognition, or how group values influence individuals' interpretations of facts, impacts the society's view of what qualifies as rape. Even under a "no means no" definition of rape, many people believe that "no" can often mean "yes" or "maybe" when consenting to sexual contact. Cultural cognition refers to how group values influence individuals' perceptions of facts. One of the Cultural Cognition's many projects is Kahan's study, "Culture, Cognition, and Consent: Who Perceives What, and Why, in Acquaintance Rape.". The results suggest two main conclusions that support the cultural cognition theory that values precede facts in both normative and cognitive ways. First, beliefs about resistance to sexual intercourse are polarized culturally. The second major finding from the study is that the legal definitions of rape had a minimum effect on the participants' judgment of whether or not a rape occurred.
