What could the agency be doing to prepare for the predicted increase in elderly with dementia in the coming years?
Emelia coordinated a Meals on Wheels Program for the elderly, and supervised 10 volunteers who delivered the meals. One day, when Emelia filled in for a volunteer and delivered a meal to the Snyders, she found Mr. Snyder very agitated and worried because Mrs. Snyder was missing. Apparently she had wandered off before. Because it was cold outside and they lived two blocks from a busy street, Emelia was alarmed and struggled with how to respond to this unexpected situation. As she tried to prioritize her responsibilities, she began to wonder if her volunteers were communicating with her and if they were well-trained for their responsibilities.
Long term strategic planning for the Senior Center should include planning to meet the needs of growing numbers of older adults, some of whom will have early signs of dementia. A close relationship with a consultant geriatric specialist would be very helpful in the long run. A day care program for older adults, support groups for caregivers, respite care for caregivers, and in-home care are all programs that will be needed in the future. The existing Case Management Program for Frail Elders could be expanded to provide many of these services. Planning should be coordinated with the Area Agency on Aging, which may be initiating some of these programs in the region and would be able to assist the Senior Center to obtain funds for new programs. Public education concerning dementia and the supports available would help family and community members become aware of the growing problem and recognize older people who need services. It would also help in recruiting volunteers from community organizations who could help in the new programs.
