Discuss two strategies that women can use in breaking through the glass ceiling.

What will be an ideal response?

1. Be assertive and ask for what you want. Women in general are uncomfortable asking for what they want for fear of being perceived as too aggressive or too selfish. Self-doubt and lack of confidence can also hold women back. 2. Highlight your achievements. Women tend to downplay their accomplishments and insights. One study found that in a group of men and women who scored the same on a science exam, the women underestimated their performance and refused to enter a science fair, while the men did the opposite. Men, particularly from nonminority groups, typically self-promote their successes. Some women and minority managers are learning to do the same so that they receive recognition and credit.
