Discuss the policies and controversy associated with the program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA).

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
1. In 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain unauthorized immigrants who entered the United States as children would be able to apply for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA).
2. Prospective beneficiaries must meet a series of requirements, including the following: Entered the United States; are currently in school, have graduated from high school or earned a GED, or are honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. armed forces (including the Coast Guard); have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, or three or more misdemeanors or do not otherwise pose a threat to public safety or national security.
3. Over a million unauthorized youths and young adults were eligible to apply.
4. Supporters argue that deporting these children and young adults would be cruel. They also point to the fact that those who are eligible for DACA represent the best educated and the highest skilled among all illegal immigrants.
5. Opponents say that DACA only encourages more illegal immigration.
