What is thatch and how can it be managed?
What will be an ideal response?
Thatch is an intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots of grasses that develops between the actively growing vegetation and the soil surface. When thatch accumulation exceeds 1/2 inch, steps should be taken to remove portions of it. This can be accomplished by either physical removal (vertical mowing) or by encouraging thatch breakdown while discouraging thatch accumulation (aerification).
