Most people sentenced to state prisons have been convicted of violent crimes; most federal prisoners were convicted of drug-law violations. Imprisonment varies considerably between states. Almost 93 percent of incarcerated offenders are men; the rate of imprisonment for men is 14 times higher than the rate for females. There is a huge disparity between blacks and whites in prison. Almost 17% of adult black men in the U.S. have served time in prison, compared to only 7.7% of adult Hispanic males and only 2.6% of adult white males. The incarcerate rate of black men in their 20s is seven times greater than for whites.
