Explain the importance of the feedback loop for sexual motivation, according to the essentialist perspective. Give one example.
What will be an ideal response?
The feedback loop incorporates incentives, arousal, and motivation, which interact and encourage or discourage a person from sexual activity. A sexual cue leads to arousal, which can activate previous memories of similar, sexually successful, and pleasurable events, which further activates motivation and increases the chances of future intercourse. Previous memories of pleasurable events serve as incentives in this case. However, if a certain situation can be associated with a previous one that ended
in failure or negative emotions and experiences, motivation for sexual activity will be lower. So for example, if a woman goes out to a nightclub and meets an attractive stranger who appears sexually interested, she might become aroused because of his attractiveness and the situation itself and remember another such case and pleasurable one-night stand that she had with a man, and she might become more motivated to repeat that experience. However, if her previous one-night stand ended in bad emotions and regret, her motivation will probably be low, and she will avoid a new, similar experience.
