What does the mnemonic FOCII stand for, and how does each element apply to news reporting?
What will be an ideal response?
The mnemonic FOCII represents the five interest elements most commonly used to draw readers’ attention: fame, oddity, conflict, immediacy, and impact. A story relying on the fame element will feature either a well-known public figure or someone enjoying his or her “15 minutes of fame.” A story featuring an oddity will discuss a rare occurrence in terms of either positive superlatives or negative outcomes. A conflict story will discuss two or more mutually exclusive endgames and describe how each outcome could be good or bad for readers. Immediacy refers to how soon after an event that the story is published and is a major driver in journalists’ quest to “break” news and “scoop” competitors. The impact element answers the question “why should I care” and draws attention by helping readers understand how a news story may affect them.
