Identify the six functions of nonverbal communication. Give an example of each function.

What will be an ideal response?

Nonverbal communication works in conjunction with the verbal message to provide clarity to the message through the following six functions: repeating, accenting, conflicting, complementing, regulating, and substituting for the verbal message. Examples may include the following: Saying “Yes” while nodding one’s head to repeat the message; emphasizing the word despise when saying, “I despise broccoli,” to accent the message; winking while saying, “I’m having so much fun,” to indicate a contradiction; making nonverbal motions to show you are listening when saying, “I’m listening to you”; looking at a quiet member of a group to request that member talk to regulate the conversation; and pointing instead of giving directions verbally to substitute a verbal message.
