Discuss the role of government in reducing the harmful effects of mineral mining and processing.

What will be an ideal response?

The first step would be for governments to eliminate the subsidies to mining companies that engage in harmful mining practices.  Governments could offer subsidies to corporations and individuals that recycle and reuse.  The main goal would be to reduce overall consumption and this could be accomplished with education and economic incentives.  A program could be setup that determines the amount of environmental damage caused by the mining and processing of minerals.  Products labeled as highly harmful could be penalized with higher tax rates.  Consumers that buy products that are labeled as causing little or no harm could receive rebates.
