Write an essay describing the 3 main steps of DNA replication in the correct order. Be sure to include the key structures involved in the process.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should include the following three steps:
1. Unwinding: The old strands are unwound and "unzipped" by the enzyme DNA helicase.
2. Complementary base pairing: New nucleotides are paired with the exposed nucleotides on the "parental" strand. DNA polymerase is the enzyme that will attach the new nucleotides. The RNA primer tells the DNA polymerase where to start the replication procedure.
3. Joining: The new nucleotides are joined to each other as well as the "parental" strand nucleotides. This forms a connected chain (daughter strand) of DNA. DNA polymerase is an enzyme that will "proofread" the strand to make sure there are no errors.
