Using the information in the accompanying figure, explain what short polypeptide is produced from the DNA segment

AAG GGC CTT. Include in your answer the role of mRNA and tRNA. What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: The DNA segment AAG GGC CTT contains three triplets each coding for an amino acid. So
the polypeptide would be three amino acids in length. The first step of making a polypeptide
is transcribing the DNA code into mRNA code. The corresponding mRNA codons would be
UUC CCG GAA. Using the table above, these correspond to the amino acids phenylalanineproline-
glutamate. The correct amino acid sequence is made as the mRNA codons are
matched to anticodons in tRNA. tRNA carries the correct amino acid to the ribosome unit
where peptide bonds are formed between sequential amino acids.
