Compare and contrast the three types of convergent plate boundaries: oceanic-oceanic, continental-continental, and oceanic-continental. Detail the geologic processes occurring at each and identify by location the geologic features that form.
Answer: Oceanic-Oceanic: Involves subduction of the older, colder ocean plate. Expect to see
volcanoes in a volcanic island arc. May also see a back-arc basin form. Locations include the
Aleutian Islands, Kermadec-Tonga arc, Japanese islands, Philippines, Caribbean Island arc.
Continental-Continental: No subduction, but numerous earthquakes, highly deformed
(folded) rocks, presence of metamorphic rocks, and formation of mountains. Locations
include the Himalayas.
