Explain how the CORIOLIS effect and HADLEY CELLS combine to create the Easterly (flowing from east to west) TRADE WINDS in the tropics.
What would be an ideal response?
Answer: As storms in the southern hemisphere swirl in a clockwise direction they intercept the Hadley cells from the equator that sink in 30 degree south latitude. This in turn causes formation of the South Eastern trade winds. In the Northern hemisphere, storms swirl in a counterclockwise direction where they are intercepted by Hadley cells from the equator that sink in the 30 degrees North latitude region. This causes the formation of the North Eastern trade winds. Both the North eastern and South eastern trade winds from the easterly winds.
