Explain the main reasons why AFC systems fell out of favor.

What will be an ideal response?

One of the main reasons why AFC systems fell out of favor was because their life span was a relatively short 5,000 hours. This was acceptable in the main application of the time, spaceships, but became unacceptable when the technology began to move to more commercial applications where 30,000 to 50,000 hours was expected. In addition, AFC systems used in the space program in particular were seen to have low power densities (although they have high efficiencies) and experienced rapid poisoning of the alkaline electrolyte when in operation.
