Explain what adolescents need to be effective parents.
What will be an ideal response?
Adolescent parents can be effective if provided with supports-economic, educational, and social. Effective supports for adolescent parents include access to health care and affordable child care; encouragement to stay in school; and training in vocational skills, parenting skills, and coping skills. Social support predicts increased parenting self-efficacy and parental satisfaction. Relationships with adults who are close, supportive, and provide guidance predict completing high school. Adolescent parents who share caregiving with their mothers or other adults learn as apprentices and become increasingly competent at parenting over time. Adolescent parents also benefit from relationships with adults who are sensitive not only to their needs as parents, but also to their own developmental needs for autonomy and support.
