Was Jackson's Indian policy consistent with his democratic ideals? How did Jackson's perception of Indians allow him to reconcile his policy with his ideals?

Jackson's Indian policy was in direct opposition to his espoused democratic ideals. Jackson treated Native Americans like conquered subjects, which was consistent with his belief that they were culturally inferior to whites. Jackson was only concerned with the needs of white settlers. After gold was discovered on their land, even the Cherokee, who had adopted Western culture, were given the choice to relocate or be reduced to the status of free African Americans in the South. Jacksonian democracy was democracy for white men only; all other groups were given few, if any, rights.
