Summarize the human social elements necessary to address when designing a conservation plan
What will be an ideal response?
To be successful, a conservation plan must have support from the local people. They must benefit in
some way, often economically, from the preserve. Legislating preserves that exclude or disenfranchise
local people is not a good idea. Poaching and illegal harvesting of resources are rampant in places
where the locals are opposed to the conservation plan. Ecotourism or allowing limited extraction of
resources from the preserve are options that have been successful. Education of the local people about
ecosystem services and consequences of ecological degradation is valuable as well.
