The Defense of Marriage Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1996. The Act stated that for federal purposes, marriage was defined as between two people of the opposite sex. It further stated that no state would be required to recognize same-sex marriages performed in another state. The Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional in 2013.
