Discuss multiple treatment interference as a threat to external validity.

What will be an ideal response?

Multiple treatment interference can potentially occur when the researchers introduce two or more treatments consecutively to the same participants (Bracht & Glass, 1968; Kaufman & Kaufman, 2005). The researchers cannot determine which intervention affected the outcome, or if it was both. The problem occurs when others (practitioners) try to implement the intervention with individuals in the population and use only one of the interventions studied. As a consequence the outcomes may be different because of the interaction between the two interventions. The solution to reducing this threat is to use only one treatment, or compare both interventions separately with the combined treatments. Another solution is to only implement the multiple treatments together, thus replicating the research conducted.
