Phishing is a practice used to illegally obtain sensitive information such as credit card numbers, account numbers, and passwords. An email is sent claiming to be from a legitimate organization such as a bank, credit card company, or online retailer asking the recipient to click on a link to update or verify his or her account information. Often the message contains a warning that your account will be suspended or canceled if you fail to provide this information (although this personal information is already on file with the legitimate organization if you do indeed have an account there). The link takes the unwary user to a fake website that appears to be legitimate and captures the information the user enters.
