List the three muscle fiber types and the contractile characteristics of each
What will be an ideal response?
Human skeletal muscle can be classified into three major fiber types:
(1 ) slow-twitch (type I), (2 ) fast-twitch type IIa, and (3 ) fast-twitch type IIx. Slow-twitch fibers shorten slowly but are highly resistant to fatigue. Fast-twitch IIx fibers shorten rapidly but fatigue rapidly. Fast-twitch IIa fibers possess a combination of the characteristics of fast- and slow-twitch fibers, so they contract rapidly but have some level of resistance to fatigue.
