What type of organization would you start or join if you wanted to improve the nutritional health of the people in your community?
My community has an increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes among teenagers and individuals in their 20s and 30s. An idea that developed and is currently being supported is to coordinate efforts of cooking classes in the supermarkets to introduce fresh fruits and vegetables. The supermarkets will be asked to consider lowering the prices and marketing these items 1-3 weeks prior to each cooking class. The cooking classes will emphasize creative, tasty, healthy recipes that are practical for working individuals to prepare or modify within their own kitchens. In addition to the cooking class and supermarket support, nutrition information about diabetes that hopefully will be disseminated amongst family members will be discussed in ongoing classes. Food manufacturers have become interested in this project as they can promote their specific items at one of the cooking classes.
