Explain what the tragedy of the commons argument has to do with environmental sustainability.

What will be an ideal response?

1. The tragedy of the commons asserts that individual/company self-regulation of access to beneficial natural resources will ultimately deplete them for everyone.
2. Because we live in a society that uses basic economic logic (i.e., competition is good and self-regulating by design), to avoid the tragedy of the commons situation government intervention and regulation must occur.
3. Companies and political conservatives see the interventions as a threat to their bottom line and potentially as a threat to state-side jobs.
4. Regulations will most likely be needed to build a more environmentally sustainable society, but it is an uphill battle.
