How does somatic recombination play a role in the formation of antibody genes?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Undifferentiated B lymphocytes have immunoglobulin genes with multiple V gene segments and multiple C gene segments. In order for a specific antibody to be produced, a single V gene segment must be joined with a single C gene segment into an immunoglobulin gene that codes for the specific antibody. The "choosing" and "joining" of the two segments is accomplished by recombination between homologous copies of the undifferentiated gene in the somatic B lymphocytes.
