Explain intergroup threat theory
Please provide the best answer for the statement
1. Intergroup threat theory (ITT) attempts to explain what happens when various
racial/ethnic groups come into contact with each other.
2. An intergroup threat exists when the ingroup perceives that the outgroup is in a
position to claim scarce resources that both groups value.
3. Certain preexisting, or antecedent, conditions heighten the intergroup threat. If group
members highly value their own culture, identify with their own group, and/or have
previous negative experiences with outgroup members that led to distrust, the greater
the perception of threat will be, especially if ingroup members feel they lack political
power.
4. Threats in ITT may be realistic, if the ingroup fears harmful possibilities; or
symbolic, if the ingroup perceives the outgroup as attacking the validity of the
ingroup’s belief system.
5. Sometimes these threats lead to changes in value systems and cultural changes;
however, it can also lead to justifications of violence.
