What makes water an excellent solvent?

What will be an ideal response?

The polarity of the water molecule and its ability to form hydrogen bonds make water an excellent solvent.

Ionic solids dissolve in water because the slight positive charge on each hydrogen atom in a water molecule attracts negatively charged ions and the slight negative charge on the oxygen atom attracts positively charged ions. Hydrogen bonds among many water molecules are collectively stronger than an ionic bond between two ions, so the solid dissolves as water molecules tug the ions apart and surround each
one.

There are two types of pepper moths. The black morph is camouflaged against the dark bark of a bare tree. The light morph is difficult to detect on trees that are covered with lichen

Environmental conditions that support substantial lichen growth would result in selection for: A. the dark colored morph of the pepper moth B. the light colored morph of the pepper moth C. Moths do not eat lichen, so its growth would have no effect on selection for one color over the other. D. Color would not be selected for or against, but those moths that excrete chemicals to destroy the lichens would be selected for.
