Ulcerative colitis starts in the lower colon, rectum and spreads progressively throughout colon and affects only the colon. UC affects the mucosal lining of the bowel. It has the potential for hemorrhage during an acute phase, fissures, abscesses, perforation, obstruction, and increased risk for colorectal cancer. An ileostomy is performed in approximately 20% of cases to remove the colon. The disease does not reoccur after having an ileostomy. The etiology is unknown: possibly enteric bacterium E. coli. The client may have 15 to 20 liquid/day where there is blood present and no steatorrhea.
