Discuss the use of alcohol hand cleaners versus handwashing with soap and water when caring for patients whose disease is spread by spores. Should alcohol hand rub be used for cleansing hands after patient care or is soap and water a better alternative? Explain your answer and state why or why not these products should or should not be used.

What will be an ideal response?

Alcohol hand cleaners should not be used when the patient has a condition spread by spores. Spores are removed from the hands and washed down the sink through the mechanical action and friction generated by washing with soap and water. Alcohol will not kill or eliminate spores.
