What is upwelling, and why is it so important biologically?
Upwelling is a type of vertical transport where cold nutrient rich water from depth is transported to the surface. Because of it's high nutrient content, particularly nitrates and phosphates, plankton in the surface water thrive. Because plankton are a food source for other organisms, the ecosystem as a whole thrives.
