When choosing your theoretical orientation, what does it mean to make an intentional choice?

What will be an ideal response?

The concept of intentionality as related to counseling refers to the process of making decisions about what course of action to take. Ivey and Ivey (2001) have defined intentionality as in this manner: “Intentionality is acting with a sense of capability and deciding from among a range of alternative actions. The intentional individual has more than one action, thought, or behavior to choose from in responding to changing life situations” (p. 20). Ivey, D’Andrea, Ivey, and Simek-Morgan (2007) have pointed out that few people would want a counselor or therapist who acted haphazardly. According to them, effective therapists should demonstrate professional intentionality that is based on a thorough understanding of counseling and therapy theories and accompanied by a broad range of intervention skills.
