What was Kinsey's major breakthrough regarding the conceptualization of homosexuality and heterosexuality?
What will be an ideal response?
Studies that viewed homosexuality and heterosexuality as two separate and distinct categories were limited because they made no provision for people who fell in between. Kinsey, however, developed a model which conceptualized homosexuality and heterosexuality as a continuum which highlighted the shades of gray between these two extremes: people who have had both some heterosexual and some homosexual experience in varying mixtures. Kinsey's scale runs from 0 (exclusively heterosexual) to 6 (exclusively homosexual), with a midpoint of 3 indicating equal amounts of homosexual and heterosexual experience. Kinsey's continuum seems better as it adds more depth to the definition of homosexual by focusing more on the behavior and not so much on the person's sexual identity. It accommodates people who have had homosexual experiences but consider themselves heterosexual and vice versa.
