Despite food insecurity being a problem in prosperous
countries such as the United States, it's not usually
associated with detectable signs of malnutrition. This
means that in the United States, clinical measurements
such as low height and weight that are normally indicative
of poor nutritional status are not always good indicators
of food insecurity. How is food insecurity assessed in the
United States?
The USDA issues a yearly survey that asks individuals
questions about their behaviors related to food access and
availability. Using the results of that survey the USDA can
classify the food-insecure respondent as having either low
food security or very low food security.
