There are many definitions of ethics, but they all have some common elements. The common elements include the concepts of morals, values, beliefs, and principles. These in turn lead to the need for personal integrity and trust in the character of another, or we won’t believe that they will act ethically if they have an opportunity for self-enrichment at the expense of others. Factors that contribute to unethical behavior include individual personality traits and attitudes, moral development, and the situation. Personality makes some people more susceptible to unethical decisions when they have an underdeveloped sense of integrity. Moral development can cause individuals to act more childlike or to create their own strict sense of moral principles. The situation can tempt even those who might be otherwise ethical to be unethical in some cases if they think it is unlikely that they will get caught.
