Describe the inductive process taken by Hawkins and Catalano when developing their social developmental model.
What will be an ideal response?
When Hawkins and Catalano invented the SSDP, they realized that the program needed to be based on sound criminology. Recall, however, that this was nearly 40 years ago, and their options were limited. They believed that three theoretical approaches had empirical support, and, despite being portrayed as rival explanations (Hirschi, 1969), were in fact complementary and could be integrated into a single theoretical model. Although the label of “life-course theories” did not exist in criminology at this time, they believe that these three perspectives could help explain the development of youths across stages in life--from being children in first grade to young adults moving beyond high school; thus, they called their approach social development model. Specifically, they integrated Hirschi’s social bond theory with its emphasis on bonding, Akers’s social learning theory with its emphasis on rewards or social reinforcement, and Sutherland’s differential association theory with its emphasis on beliefs guiding behavioral choices (Catalano et al., 2005; Hawkins et al., 2003).
