Explain why S waves are unable to pass through the outer core

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: S waves cannot pass through the outer core because it is liquid. Because S waves are shear waves, they propagate energy by shifting intergrown mineral crystals. Since the mineral crystals in a liquid are not connected, they cannot be shifted to transfer the energy.
